AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
At Tarawera High School we have a wide range of after school activities on offer for our students. If you are interested in taking part or finding out more please contact us.
Outdoor Education
We have a vision to create one of the best Outdoor Education programmes in the country. We offer this as a course in Year 10-13 giving students a chance to step outside their comfort zone in safe but challenging environments. The programme includes white-water kayaking, mountain biking, rock-climbing, diving, survival skills and snow sports.
We also provide a range of extra-curricular opportunities such as adventure racing, mountain biking, rock-climbing and white-water kayaking. See more of our sporting activities on offer at our school below.
Fitness Trail
Kim Van der AA from Earthcycles designed and built both our junior bike track and the senior Fitness Trail providing lessons for our Outdoor Education, Defence Academy and PE students on how to complete each activity. The trail has been built to incorporate various types of skills that will be needed should students wish to go on into the forces or any occupation requiring a high level of fitness.
These activities include balancing beams, crawling under nets, monkey bar swings, climbing over obstacles and teamwork getting everyone up and on top of one activity. The course is designed for dual team participation to allow for some healthy competition between classes and students.
Tarawera High School Bike Track
As part of the new National Cycle Education System programme the ‘Bike On NZ Charitable trust’ provided funding to Tarawera High School to support the installation of our new bike track. As a school that has Year 7 and 8 students, this primary school initiative saw Tarawera High School eligible to receive funding for our bikes.
Cycling supports a range of shared outcomes including transport, injury prevention, health, education and sport. We are supporting the National Cycle Education programme by engaging with our community; promoting cycling; and encouraging people to safely share the road and pathways. The benefits of which are –
- More New Zealanders develop safe road skills early in life
- More New Zealanders cycling
- More empathy on our roads
- Helps our kids get more active and kickstart healthier lifestyles
- One component in increasing active transport to school, reducing school gate congestion.
Kapa Haka
Tarawera High School offers students the opportunity to become members of the Kapa Haka and use it as a learning tool to learn about tikanga Māori, ngā mahi Rēhia and Te Reo Māori.
Kapa Haka is used to strengthen the links of our students to reveal the potential of Rangatiratanga (leadership), tuakanateina (mentoring), whanaungatanga (building relationships) and Ahureatanga (culturalism).
The rōpū performs at school events, community events, as well as the annual Tuwharetoa Taiopenga Festival.
School Production
Our extra Curricular programme allows students to be involved in the annual School Production. We are very proud of our students who have reaped the rewards from performing in our school productions.

Tarawera High School prides itself on its sporting achievements. We have a variety of different codes to complement our students’ academic studies.
